Hello, i have a 1999 ram 1500 and am looking to change the ignition switch to a push button and kill switch and hoping to do so in a way that i dont have to have my key in the ignition cause it kinda defeats the purpose. Basically i want to end up with the prerunner/racecar style panel on the dash. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
The attachment is for the ron francis iStart. This is a proximity type sensor (like most high end cars) and should take the place of any ignition, since it has 5 positions like an OEM ignition
Rig up a toggle switch- it only needs power from a 12V source so take a 12V wire and run it to one terminal of toggle switch. The other terminal on switch is for the device, in your case you'd have a wire running from second terminal of switch to the coil. If your toggle has a third terminal, you can use if for ground.
Pushbutton-Like compton said, one wire goes to Starter, believe its the 'S' post. The other term just needs 12v power.
I run two on my car, one in the cab and one in the engine bay so as to adjust lash when needed.
So if your truck doesn't have the factory chip in the key/resistor etc.....
then as stated above, toggle and a push button. You can pull the steering wheel and remove the locking ring, then the steering wheel won't lock with the key out.
I have A 1999 Dodge ram 1500 st. Manual everything so i dont believe there are any antitheft systems on the truck. I believe i have drawn up a diagram that will work for my truck. Just wondering how to bypass the key mechanism on the steering column (locking wheel). I attached the diagram below. If it looks incorrect or correct please let me know. Thank you! I plan on making the switches in to a domino effect (one must be on before the next) so if the main kill switch faults i can kill it with one of the previous switch. I plan on making the main kill switch just a simple turn key mechanism that way i can the key with me. Kind of defeats the purpose of what im doin, i know, but im changing the style of my truck so this helps the interior aspect.
Your Truck, your taste etc..... but why make it cascade? IMO you're asking for trouble down the road. Much simpler to have a main "On" to power your existing fuse block and a "ACCY" switch. Mimicking the factory wiring system. Add a push to start.
Putting a simple two pole key switch in is a waste of money...... just about anyone could figure out in 2 seconds to cut the wires and twist them together....... key no longer needed.
If you want to eliminate the key, there are a couple of ways.......
Interrupt the starter solenoid feed with a hidden switch..... spring loaded toggle must be held down and the push to start button must be depressed.
Interrupt the coil + feed, by pulling the fuse or a hidden switch.
Using both of these would not prevent theft but would thwart the armature.
to add to the anti theft stuff, for about ten bucks you can buy a knob that just goes on your battery terminal. when you leave the car, just pop the hood and take the knob off. thief won't be able to start the car unless he brought some tools with him and can figure things out. like others said, you can't stop a thief, but you can sure slow them down.
