Does anyone know how I can install a some what hidden push button starter in my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500? I was thinking of having where I don't need the key in the ignition but also having a hidden kill switch for saftey reasons. Any and all information will help.

Do you want a hidden STARTER BUTTON or an IGNITION SWITCH BYPASS?

One provides Starter solenoid power to activate the starter only, the other provides power to the ignition system..in which case you will need 2 switches..One for start (push button)and one for the ignition (toggle).

Do you have VATS ? If so an ignition bypass isn't going to work..a KILL switch will..

Good questions raised by doc. You need to specify exactly what you are looking to accomplish. I'm not too familiar with Dodge but when I went to look into buying a remote start for my wife's '99 Voyager the salesman asked my what color key I had. If I remember he said mine didn't have passive anti-theft because I had a black plastic key (see attached photo). I think he said my van would have had a gray plastic key if it had anti-theft. '98 could be completely different. I know for the remote starts they do make by-passes for these systems but I don't know the details. One thing you should keep in mind also is most newer vehicles have multiple modules that not only retain information but communicate with each other. Newer GM's have Powertrain Control Modules, Body Control Modules, Door Modules, Instrument Cluster Modules, etc.. I would advise a kill device that would only interrupt your ignition/start system and not kill power to the whole vehicle thereby forcing your modules to do a 'relearn' every time you reconnect power. That would be like constantly unplugging your home PC from the wall without allowing it do do a proper shut-down. Just a thought.

Well what I want is a button that I push to start my truck without needing to turn the key and then have the kill switch to shut off the vehicle. I do not have any sort of anti-theft at all.

Need to know more about your Truck, type engine , Type induction, type ignition..So I can pull the proper schematic and look at the possibilities.

Just a suggestion doc but once you get his info I would have him tap into the ignition feed from his ignition switch installing an on/off switch to supply power to his ignition system instead of the factory switch and then a momentary on/off pushbutton to the start circuit. Like you said in your first post, he is looking to modify two separate circuits here. Also check out your schematic cause if he bypasses the factory switch to start the vehicle without a key he will need to supply power to any other circuits that may also become 'hot' when the key is turned to the 'on' position. If you set him up right it will not interfere with any other systems in the vehicle. Hope that made sense.

Yup! Perfect sense!

I pulled a few schematics up for that truck and there are a bunch of different systems that require power to function..(without the key.)

And there are a bunch of different schematics for engine control for that year..

We will have to see what he has.
