If you have a "Daytona" yoke and regular pinion bearings, you will run out of spline when trying to preload the pinion bearings. You can buy a spacer from Randy Ring and Pinion to use with a Daytona yoke that will make it work, or a new yoke.

Are you talking about the pinion nut? If you put in a new crush spacer then you will need to clamp the yoke down tight in something strong enough to hold it while you put around 300 foot pounds of torque on the nut to crush the spacer. You will probably need a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar with a cheater pipe on it. Crush the spacer until you get about 19-22 inch pounds of preload on the bearings.
