PVC Valve

OK OK I have seen a lot of post today about PVC Valve placements. I have a question

I do not have a PVC Valve installed on my 79 SBC 350; currently I have a breather coming off one of my valve covers with a tube that vents to the bottom (Outside) of the frame. Is this hurting my performance any? The motor seems to run great, just curious about this.

Thanks

No, your carb'd 350 is fine, I wonder though, do you have a hole on each valve cover?, on my 78 350 I have two oil breather caps, one on each side.

Your setup is probably "good enough", but - there's no reason NOT to run a PCV on a street engine. For one thing, a lot of breathers just have steel wool or something similarly coarse in them for filtration, which is fine when they're exhaling, but what about when air outside air moves through that breather into your motor? Lots of dust and crap that you don't want inside your engine. Plus, your draft tube is going to be puking oil out onto the underside of your car (which I guess is helpful for corrosion control), as well as your garage or trailer floor, the street, the track staging area, etc.

And a properly functioning PCV system (PCV valve on one side, breather drawing filtered air from your air cleaner on the other side) will reduce oil leakage & emissions, while theoretically improving your ring seal slightly, due to the vacuum in the crankcase (not technically a vacuum, but lower than atmospheric pressure). They're cheap and simple. I'd run one. You do what you want.
