Q Jet on a 327, question by newcomer

Hi!

I´m new to the forum and also new to the world of v8:s as well. Just bought my first one, a 1966 Nova Stationwagon, a real beater. I have been restoring and repairing old 60s Volvos before (I´m a Swede), so everything is a bit new to me in this area.

It has a header equipped 327 that I belive came from a circa ´68 Nova. The 2 barrel Rochester 2 Jet that is on it has bad mileage and gives little power, I almost got beaten by a ´88 toyota at the stoplights last week! I belive the rest of the engine is in OK shape.

Yesterday I was given (YES!) a smog 350 from a ´79 Chevy Van by a friend of mine, and my questions are:

- Does the aluminum 4 barrel intake fit my 327?
- Does the Carter Quadrajet carb work with my 327, or should I stick with the old Rochester?

I´m after better mileage and, if possible, more HP.

The q-jet is acually a rochester but but yes the small block intakes are all interchangeable. A 4 barrel q-jet will give quite a boast in power and as long as you keep you foot out of it, it should give pretty comprable possibly better fuel miliage as the 2 barrel. A 79 intake will be a pretty restrictive smog design but it will still be quite an imporvement.

Thanks!

OK, the intake is a bit restricted. I guess that means that is has narrower ports? That is OK with me ´cause I´m after torque and ecomomy instead of a high rpm engine.

There was also a cast iron intake that came together with the engine. Is this probably an older (better) item? I have to check the ID number on it tomorrow...

Carter actually made Q-jets too, saw one in person back in the 70's.
The Q-jet will give better gas milage than the two barrell.
Sometime in the late 70's or early 80's the bolt angle on the intake/head changed. The intake bolts may have to be elongated to screw in. Someboby help me on this one??
Have fun,
Vern

re: Q Jet on a 327, question by newcomer

I´ve done my homework now, and here are the numbers for the parts:

Carb: Carter Quadrajet, 170 572 13, 1517 AWP. It´s from a 1975 Chevy as far as I can tell from the code chart at http://www.buickperformance.com/qjet.html

Aluminum Intake: 140 144 32. It has the wierd little emissions thing outlet next to the termostat housing. Came with my Q-jet carb.

Iron Intake: 346 250, 11. It doesn´t have the outlet next to the termostat mentioned above. It has a "spring" next to the carb at the passenger side of the intake. Probably for the choke on some other carb.

-So... what intake to use? The ports are the same size as far as I can tell.

-The Q-jet is a smog item for a 350, it´s probably a bit lean for that engine. Is it possible that the jetting will be in the right ballpark for my stock 327?

the lil pasage on the side is probly for an egr valve. the "spring" is the old choke linkage for a manual choke carb, re jetting should fix the lean issue, but you may want to see if some one with a lil more than 2 years experiance with these things answeres.

From what I hear, the stock aluminum intake manifolds were prone to thread-stripping, warping, & cracking. I think I would prefer the iron one, but if the aluminum one is working OK now, I'd give it a try. You already have a good exhaust system, so the 4-barrel should be a major improvement.
