Quadrajet choke

:welcome:Can a hot air choke on a quadrajet be converted to an electrical choke? I have no provision for a line to the choke and wonder if a conversion can be done. Thanks.

Yes, it's fairly straightforward. The gasket that's used w/the hot air choke between the coil assembly and the choke housing should be removed so there's a ground pathway between the electric heater assembly and the engine.

The choke gets power while the engine is running. There are different ways of wiring it, some prefer to use an oil pressure switch that will power the choke heater only when the engine has oil pressure so the choke won't open just by the key being turned On.

Another method is to use the alternator field coil (wire to idiot light) to switch a relay wired to provide battery voltage to the choke. The downside is if alternator goes bad or belt breaks.

Don't use the ignition/coil positive terminal.

In the real world, there's little downside to using a switched 12 VDC circuit like for the wiper motor or wired to a fuse box auxiliary circuit. Just be sure the circuit is ON w/the key in the ON position, not in the Accessory position or w/key off.

The choke doesn't pull much current, so there's no need to add a bigger fuse if you use a circuit like for the wipers,

I've done plenty of them and I just run a wire from the fuse box that has 12 volts with the key on. Like stated take out the gasket betweem the choke coil ans housing. Also, be sure to plug the vacuum port in the choke housing that pulled the hot air up from the u tube that went into the intake.
