quadrajet rebuild?

have 77 Chevy 350... da carb isn't running correctly...my symptoms are: early morning it cranks fine but one hot it takes about 5 seconds when idle the oil psi jumps up and down about 10 psi (no tach) it smokes heavy and when I rev it thick black smoke is plentiful...but when I'm driving it runs fine but consumes lots of gas... time for rebuild?

carb rebuild kit

Did it ever run ok? When was the last time it was rebuilt? Sounds like time for a rebuild kit. You can get one here:

http://www.cliffshighperformance.com/parts.html or do a Yahoo search.

A few weeks ago I installed a rebuild kit in my Pontiac 400 and it starts much better. Here are the directions I used:

http://www.vetteprojects.com/kstyer/quadrajet.htm

I still need to install the throttle shaft bushing kit. If the throttle shaft and carb body are worn it will suck air around the shaft and idle way too fast. You can also get the throttle bushings from Cliff. The throttle shaft bushings require a 25\64" drill.

Just be sure and clean out the old carb good. I found boiling water and detergent worked for me.

If you'd have said it takes a lot of cranking after sitting for a day or two, plus it smoked black after a restart I'd have said the main wells were leaking.

But what you describe may not be that, and could be the choke out of adjustment. The oil pressure fluctuation is unrelated to the carb, unless the engine RPM is changing so much (because of the carb) to cause the gage to move around.

In any event, rebuilding it may help things.
