Quarters not welded to trunk in 54 dodge
Ok so I've been working heavy under my 54 dodge, welding on some patches in the wheel well. Here is what I found.
My quarterpanels are not welded to the trunk. The trunk floor almost touches the quarter panel and then there is some black goop in there. Anyone know if this is factory? It doesn't seem like it should be, but I want to be positive. The wheel well is welded to the quarter, but behind it the trunk floor is not, and there's no extention like in 70's cars, it goes strait to the side of the quarter and has about a 1/4 inch of this stuff. Any help? |

call me crazy, but that sounds factory to me.
if it was me, i'd make it solid. since your in there patching things up..... anything to save a buck is the corporate motto.

I "would not" weld a quarter panel to an outer wheel house. When the car twists under torque things will move but the welded area will not. Eventually you will see it from outside the car. I "would not" do it.
My 65 chevelle has a rubber piece between the two. There is even an indentation in the outer wheel house for the rubber to lay in. To be clear, the wheel opening "flanges" should be welded to the outer wheel house flanges. Spot welded from the factory. But out in the middle of the quarter, where the trunk would be, I would not weld. Just my opinion. |

Thanks that's what I wanted to know. I was afraid if I connected it I would distort the quarters.
