question about ac compressor

simple question: when the ac is on, should the ac compressor be constantly running (on an 95 escort)? I keep hearing a slight popping sound from some type of transistor, then the ac compressor shuts down, then back on a again in another few seconds?

Does it sound like the compressor going bad?

The compressor must cycle on and off to maintain the correct amount of system pressure. You will see the clutch turn on and off.

It's possible what you are hearing is the low pressure cut off switch. If your compressor is low on freon it will cycle continuously and rapidly.
