Question about carb spacers with the Quadrajet

Ok, so I just finished reading this book by Circle Track magazine called "Stock Car Racing Engine Technology" and I have a question. It says in the book that as a "rule of thumb" that a smaller carb will perform better away from the intake manifold floor and that a larger one will perform better closer to the intake manifold floor.

Basically with a smaller carb, there's more to gain with a spacer? Is there any validity to this outside of running around a circle track at 7k rpm?

If so, If you were to have a carb like a quadrajet on a smaller engine like a 305, would it be more beneficial for it to be a on carb spacer compared to a large displacement engine like a 454?

The "rule of thumb" sounds like quite a generalization to me...

I don't have it next to me right now (at work) but I believe it was published in 2007. However, it's intended as a compilation of circle track's tech articles into one cohesive, linear book. Some of the things in there I've read are listed as dating back to the 80s. Honestly, I bought the book for a dollar at a book store fire sale. I'm not big on magazine "tech" and I'm rather skeptical at this moment.

The only rule of thumb I know about carb spacers is there is no rule of thumb. Some engines respond and some don't. Just have to try it and see.
