WOW :eek: looks like I'm going to be looking for an intake and carb for my 460 in my 75 Lincoln (Pics coming soon). I thought they would have more torque than that. The buick 455 and the caddy 500 have close to 500 into the smog years. Can't wait until May for the canfield swap meet!

I got 365 from the factory with my lil ol 429 TJ.

Imagine what Comp Cams 270H with .519 lift, Performer Intake and a 800cfm Edelbrock will do. Oh and those kick *ss March Performance billet pullies.

Its almost running boys, I can hear the rumble now....

Hey BBB;

You're pretty smart on those 429-460 series engines. Did the 429CJ or Boss 429 use anything better than DOVE heads or was that the best Ford offered (except for the 429 Hemi)? I'm guessing they (429CJ, 429TJ, Boss429, 460MK III) all had 10.5:1 compression. With that cam U R using, did you change anything else in the valve-train? I know U got better valves, but R they the same specs as stock? R U using stock rockers and lifters as well? Also have U ever heard that the oil pumps in these engines are a little undersized? I thought I'd ask someone who's actually studied and done surgery on the beast.

The 429CJ and Boss used different heads than the standard 429 heads. Everybody raves about the D0VE heads, but the '68 (C8VE) and '69 (C9VE) are pretty much the same. I have a 429 Thunderjet out of a '68 Thunderbird. So I have the high compression heads with flat top pistons.

I'll give you the list on my goodies later, as I'm tying up the main phone line and can't be online long. Maybe I should get off my hiney and get this DSL modem hooked up. lol

:D

Ok, its all Comp Cams stuff. Magnum roller tip 1.7 rockers, hydraulic lifters, the valves are stock sizes. I had hardened seats put in the heads.

I got an Edelbrock aluminum water pump, had a manual Holley fuel pump, but due to the location of the bracket for the PS pump, have to go to an electric fuel pump.

besides the compression the cams got retarded so I'd also get an adjustable timing set when you get ready to install the cam, I'd stay away from too much conpression (9.0 to 1 on the street). The Boss is a Heni in the purest since but Ford "clipped" the sides of the combustion chambers to give some quench, this was at a time when they were getting into emmision designed engines and Ford hoped that it would allow it to meet emmision standards better than a complete open Hemi design. With modern injection and ignitions,etc. that isn't a problem like it was at that time.

BBB;

Thanks for the info. It's good to hear someone doing a realistic, streetable engine build up, on an engine that's a prime candidate.

Barz51;

Ford did produce a real hemi-head 429, that went into very limited production. The NASCAR boys said "hemi what???" and production was killed immediately. Combustion chamber and valve arrangement was almost identical to the Mopar 426 Hemi. I have no idea what was used on the Boss 429. I thought BBB might know.

Oops, my bad.

I dug up some old articles I had on 385 series heads. U guys R right. The boss 429did have hemi heads. The next best was the CJ/SCJ head w/bigger valves and oversize runners. Then the police interceptor head, which is pretty scarce. The DOVE type heads from 1968-71 had 76cc chambers, and from 1972 on, the chambers were over 90cc.

I should have checked before I posted :rolleyes: :(
