question about tubbing...

I'd love to tub my car but unfortunately I do not have any experience with something of that magnitude, nor do I have the funds to pay someone else.

So If I wanted to install a shortened rear with wide tires do I have any options? Someone told me to use air shocks but from what I've read that places all the weight on the shock mounts which isn't designed for that.
Is there a lift kit or something that would safely raise the body over the tires?

Installing tubs is not that difficult. Here's a tutorial from S&W...

What kind of car is it?

And please, don't lift the back up super high just to put wide tires under it.

Here's a little better article I think. Jacking it way up to put tires under it looks stupid IMO.

You might also just look into a mini tub depending on the car you can just move the springs in and get a wider tire to fit.

LOL Mike..... This car is going to be a toy. And in my childhood alot of the cars were built with a high *** and low front. So I had thought of doing just that. It's not exactly practical but it would have the look of cars from my childhood. Not definitely sold on it but I have to keep it in the realm of possibility's, if I don't feel comfortable with tubbing.

Looking at the mini tub instructions it looks like the wheel well goes right up to the frame but no farther. Would I have to have a custom set of rims to fill the space if I didn't shorten the axle?

I looked at the website for back halving the car and while very detailed and written there is no WAY I could do that kind of work! So guess it's mini or jacked.

With a hammer, sawzall and a basic wire feed welder you can make room for a shortened rear end and tires.

If you don't do that just run the tires sticking out the side, I think that looks better than raising it up, it one must choose between the two .

Tubbing

On my journal there is a short skit on how I did the patterns for my tubs. This was also my first project. Before I started the tubs for my race car it seemed overwhelming. I bought a kit from Jeg's and it had some instructions. As you go along you can always takes pics and post them and ask questions. I didn't think I could do a good job but I did, and so can you!

Thanks for the encouragement! I definitely want to but guess I'm just scared of getting in over my head. I'll wait till I can find a way to build some sort of tilt or rotisserie and then take a good long look and see if I can psyche myself up.
