I am in the process of repainting my mustang. I was going through old receipts from the person i bought it from and i found the one for the paint. The car was repainted in 2000 by maaco in California. Now im trying to figure out what kind of paint and other work they did, so i was looking for help. The receipt has these things circled
1.paint services: ultra-urethane
2.protection packages: int. clr. ct.
3.additional paint charges: und. hd/trunk jambs
4.other paint options: catalysed sealer strip

all with a 5yr warranty, along with the body work total came out to almost 2100.00
the color was black. With this information is there anyway to tell what kind of paint is on the car, and if it is compatible with the new paint? I dont want to have to strip the entire car back down to bare metal. I am changing colors and using dupont

Eyesight is 2nd thing to go with old age, so just checking!

Most Maacos the urethane upgrade means they put a better hardener in the Nason acrylic enamel.

Slim chance they really did use a urethane.

If the primer you put on did not lift it, then its compatible.
As far as stripping, it needed stripping when it left Maaco if not before it got there.

yea, 2,100.00 at maaco, i about fell over also. Its pretty sad to pay all that money and here less than 4yrs later i am redoing it.
The few pieces i have done already were stripped down to bare mateal. fenders and hood). Now im working on the doors and trunk. Since im changing colors i was thinking about just spraying over the door jambs and underside of trunk because they look good.

Re. Jambs and under deck lid. Scuff and shoot most likely they have never been painted and its factory paint.

I worked at a Maaco store in the midwest a few years ago. We used Sherwin Williams paint. Just before I left, they were in the process of switching to Akzo Nobel. Bottom line was cost, and the franchise owner was pinching pennies, thus the change. Hope it helps.

jambs and underside were redone at maaco also. Not the original color(original was yellow, now its black).
if i try to paint over it will i see problems right away, like in a few seconds top days or will it be a long term problem like in a year?

the way im spraying the rest of the stuff is
etching primer
high build primer
sealer
base coat
clear coat

The problem will show up within 5 minutes, in form of wrinkling or lifting when you apply the 2K primer.
