Question on going from open to posi rearend.

Hello guys I just got done putting all new brake lines on my 96 chevy s10 2 wheel drive and I had to put new bearing seals on my rear axles and I had my rearend cover off and I was going to be getting some new gears to put into it next spring but was wondering what all do I have to do to make it a post rearend? Can I still use my new gears when I convert it too a posi rearend? Or do I have to get a different type of gears. Thanks for any pointers.
Eric

The gears and axles will be the same. The '96 S10 will probably have the 7.5 rear end with 28 spline axles. This rear end uses a 2 series differential for 3.08 to 2.41 gears and a 3 series differential for 3.23 to 4.10 gears. You must get the right series differential for the gears that you will be installing. You also must get the right differential for your axle splines. Yours should have the 28 spline axles, but it is possible that it could have the 26 spline axles.

I recommend that you get an Eaton Posi when you do this. It's well worth any extra money over the Auburn or others.

The 8.5 rear end was also available with certain drive train combinations, so be sure you know what you have before getting any parts.

Yeah I have 4.10 gears so Ihave the three gear carrier and I was going to get a 3.42 ring and pinion set from summit racing and I did not know if those eaton posi units would work with the ring and pinion gear sets. That is what I was looking at doing and I do have the 7.5/7.62 rear end on it now.

Well I don't want to use something that will be weak by any means. I am not racing or taking my s10 to the track or anything but it does have a 350 sbc in it with close to 400 hp at the most and I plan on getting a ring and pinion set from jegs or summit and they are good for just driving around. I just want to be able to get a eaton posi unit that will work with all whats in it now so I don't have to get another rearend. I will definitely go with eaton after reading some bad press on auburn and others. I am going with gear swap first then later on the posi.

Be carefull with those bargan brand gears. Sometimes they are all right, but many times they are not worth the savings.
