I have a 400 from a 1977 f-250, I broke it down and had it bored .080 over and had a 3 angle valve job done on the heads, but i am looking for 400 hp or better. how can I achieve this with this motor? I have money to spend just not the knowledge of this particular engine. Any help would be appriciated- thanks

Anything bigger than a 268 HE style cam is too much cam since you can't go much above 5500. Stay with the big RV style cams sold specifically for this engine and you won't go wrong, don't assume that a dual plane intake is good either. These are mid range engines and need just as much carb and intake as a healthy 427 Chevy, they just can't use too big a cam. Have a look at my <a href="http://hotrodders.com/cgibin/album/album.pl?album=00001837" target="_blank">400</a>, this one puts out close to 400HP depending on exhaust.

Here's a tech article on the 351M/400. I didn't read it, cause I ditched my 351M in favor of a 429.

I'm using the stock heads, I was told they were 351 heads but haven't got thr numbers to run them yet

The casting number is on the head under the valve covers, The D4AE is good too. 400 and 351M heads are the same in all years.
