Questions on '37 Buick ignition

I found some keys that appear to work in the ignition of my 37 Buick, but I do have a couple of questions that perhaps someone could help with.
The ignition is probably the original 37 ignition.
1) There is a small metal lever on the right side of the ignition that can be flipped up or down. Do you know what that lever is for?
2) The key turns counter-clockwise which is opposite of what I'm used to. Does that make sense?
Thanks

switch

The lever is probably your on/off switch and a button on dash turns starter. Key is to lock switch so it can't be moved. Not sure but it may also lock your steering column.
