Questions about a Dodge 318

Hey Guys I got a couple of questions about a motor I'm thinking about getting and just wondering if you guys think it would be worth the time to rebuild and use one day.

it is a 1987 dodge van , the body is shot but it got a decent 318 motor.

so what i am wondering is the 1987 318 a decent motor?
what kind of HP did the 318 come with?
what kind of HP can i get with it?

Thanks Guys for any Advice

An 1987 should have the pretty good swirl-port 302 casting closed chamber heads if its a 2 barrel, or open-chamber heads (for a 360) if its a 4 barrel. The 2bbl was rated at 140hp @ 3600 RPM and 165@4000 for a 4bbl (from Chilton's).

As far as how much HP can you get - how much do you want? There was a 318 build-up in Hot Rod a couple of months a go that made 400hp with a set of seriously worked 302 casting heads. The 318 was never marketed as a performance motor, but they respond to the same mods and parts that a 340 or 360 will. You'll have a pretty hard time hurting one, they are extremely durable.
