Questions about primers...

hey there - my pop and I are putting the finishing touches on a 29 Ford Model A Roadster. It was run last summer with grey primer. Over the winter we beefed up the frame to handle a hemi 392 which has now taken the palce of the old 302 that was in there...

anyhow, we're now at the point of choosing paint. we've decided to go with the rat rod black suede look. I've heard that you can just use semi-flat primer and then use a matte clear. I've also heard about just using John Deere Blitz Black paint. Or rattle can flat black.

I guess I'm trying to say that there's a million ways to do this - I'd like to know the best way. We have alot of good work into this car and although we're going for the nostalgia look runnign with the black suede, we'd like something that can hold up for a few years before we decide to blow $10,000 on some crazy candied mile deep job.

So, what is the best paint/method to use to get that old black suede look?

-jase

That will be up to YOU.
Like you said, a million and one way's.
If you do decide to use a matte clear,which will give the best protection,It would be BEST to shoot it in a booth. Reason being, as far as I know there is NO color sanding or buffing. So ANY trash or orange peal will be a problem.
Buffing=SHINE.

Hang loose,I'm sure some more oppinions will be up.

I'm not a big fan of Sikkens products but I have to say their Autocryl Rally Black is about the best satin/suede looking black I've ever used. Very tough stuff. Thicker than snot to spray but if you've got a good gun the stuff really rocks. Bob

hey baddbob

I've looked into teh sikkens stuff - where did you get this paint? I can find MSDS and TDS but no resellers...any help would be great...

Also, when you used this paint did you have to use a clear on it to seal againt moisture or will it block moisture on its own?

thanks a bunch!!
