Questions for the Mac guys...

So Im in dire need of a laptop, with university papers piling on and my dad using our home computer as his business computer for his home-run company I dont get a lot of time on it, and I hate writing papers in the comp lab at school, I just cant focus.
So, heres my question...are Macs really that much better? Some of friends swear on them, some of my friends think they're the lamest thing the computer world has ever put out. I can get a way better computer (comparing stats) for cheaper when going the microsoft way. Bigger screen, more harddrive, better graphics card etc, for cheaper than a Mac. Why are Macs that more expensive, and is it worth it in the long run to get a Mac?
Ive only used a Mac once, and it had me confused a little.
Basically, just looking for opinions...thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike
I used MAC's for years in the grafic arts industry. For graphics they have always been better than P.C.s.
Ive been using a P.C. at home for a couple years now because my wife uses them at work.
Personally I can't wait untill I can get another MAC. I hate the P.C.
For me the MAC's were easier to learn on and use.
Just my personal opinion. The wife likes the P.C.

I suggest going the windows direction. Unless you really need OSX for something specific, you will have better luck with software compatibility in windows. Also it is a bit of a change from windows, I can't ever figure out where anything is and I can run linux servers lol!

You cannot really upgrade a laptop, getting the best one hardware wise you can afford is always the best. As you said, the mac laptops are not as fast and that in the long run is far worse.

Make sure you get at least a gig or ram, anything but a celeron, a dvd burner, and the best screen you can get. I just got a Compaq laptop new for my sister that went off to college this fall. Sempron 3300+, 512Megs ram, ATI 200M graphics, 14" widescreen, internal wireless, and an 8x DVD burner for $600. Equivalent macbook is probably in the $900-$1000 range.

Ok, so here we got both views of the spectrum What really attracts me to Mac is the software it comes with (I would love to go deeper into grapic designing, and music recording), plus the free anti-virus (no need to buy Norton) and the fact that there are way less viruses for Mac then for windows.
Now, here are 2 computers Im comparing, the price is the same

Mac
13" screen
1.8 gHz
512mb ram (expandable to 2gig)
64mb graphics
Intel processor
DVD burner

PC (Gateway)
14" widescreen
1024MB ram
1.6gHZ
128MB graphics
Intel processor
DVD burner
Tablet pc (means you can flip the screen, lay it flat and write on it)
Free HP printer

PC (Toshiba)
15.4" widescreen
1024MB ram
120GB hardrive
256MB graphics

Logic is pushing me towards a PC, but I would really like to get some more input from Mac guys as well.
Novaman, my bro got the exact same computer you're talking about and he loves it...

Mike

I use both the Mac and Wintel platforms daily. I greatly prefer the Mac.
