Questions for paint guys - body shop messed up my car
Hello everyone, this isn't a question for my hotrod beetle project, but instead my dd a 2009 cobalt that I just bought about 2 months ago.
To start things off about 2 weeks ago I waxed my car and the very next day I hit a deer and my car only had 2800 miles on it :(

So I've herd from a few people that the body shop at the dealer I bought the car from was pretty good, and I had a good experience dealing with them when I bought the car, so much that we went back and bought a 2nd cobalt for my wife a week after I got mine.
So the body shop had to replace the fender, hood, and headlight and repaired the door and bumper, and of course paint all of the above.... Well except for the headlight ;)
So when they finished it up I noticed that the inner window seal/scraper was missing along with a foam pad under the hood, the ambient temp sensor was dangling by the wires, and the headlight wasn't put in straigt. Then I got looking at the paint job, the hood and door looked good, but the bumper and new fender didn't. I could see scratches under the paint in the fender, and scuffs in the paint in the bumper and fender, and also some scratches in the A pillar that they didn't touch. There were also 5 or 6 spots where it looks like they got a spec of dirt in the paint and then had a miniature puddle build up. I took it back to them and they gave me a free rental and said they'd fix it. The guy I talked to thought the wet sanding was done incorrectly hints the scratches under the paint and the guy tried to buff them out and did the other damage.
So today I got a call from them saying it was done....... Again.......
I get there and first thing I do is open the door and the window seal/scraper was still missing!!! and it was the first thing I noticed last time and the first thing on there list of stuff to fix
I got pissed off at that point and then started pointing anything I could find wrong in the paint. They did buff out about 75% off the stuff I noticed last time, I couldn't see the scratches in the fender and it looked like the other scuffs and stuff were gone. But I could still see the scratches in the A pillar clear as day and now there were shinny specs in the area. They tried to buff out the scratches and first tried to tell me the shinny specs were the metalic in the paint, but its a non metalic black paint :nono:, then he said it was probably just polishing compound???? and those 5 or 6 dust specs/puddles were still there. He also said that any body shop would have a couple flaws here and there like those 5 or 6 spots, but with all the other problems I was going to ride there butts.......
They said they'd try to buff out those and get it back to me tomarrow, but we'll see what happens. I went and let my salesman know what was going on and he and the manager went over and chewed out the body shop guys because they are about to loose a customer that just bought 2 brand new cars from them, etc.... So I'm not a paint expert, I've primed a truck I restore a few years ago, but had to sell it before I had to paint it, and I've also sprayed cheap tractor enamel on our hovercrafts but once again not an expert so I have a couple questions:
So first of all is it normal to have a couple flaws rather it bet dirt specs or what from any "normal" body shop like the guy was saying??? Or was he trying to cover his but???? I probably wouldn't have said anything about a couple barley noticable specs if it wasn't for eveything else.
Also are new cars like my cobalt painted with a bb and cc????? Or is it just a single high gloss paint??? If its a bb and cc they can do all the buffing in the the world and not take out the dirt/paint puddles without going through the clear correct????
Any other info or advice that you guys can give me to help fight with these guys to get my car back to the way it should be???
Let's see, how can I say this politely. Nope, I can't. Your dealers body shop sucks. Unfortunately, you already paid them. Go see the General Manager at the dealership and tell him you want him to send your car to the same shop his Used Car Manager sends their used cars to and pay for it.
Just so you know, the used car manager won't send cars to their own shop because the price is too high. But, take a look at their used car inventory and you won't see any of those complaints you have on the cars they're trying to sell. I worked at several dealerships and know the inside politics.
The customer is always right, and you do not have to accept it if your not happy... it's bull saying there will always be flaws, that's like admitting that there shop guys do shoddy work and trying to cover for it like it's ok for that stuff..
I had a recent run in like this with a gas door... very simple job to paint and I took it to a shop cause I didn't have time to paint it and it wasn't going to cost much ( $50 )... they sprayed a huge run in the base and bugs in the clear.. gave it to me and of course the run and bugs in the clear were unacceptable even for a gas door so I had them try again, and they buffed the paint out with a course compound and it left visable scratches, and the run was still there.. complained again to them again, and was told it would be $25 and that I was being ridiculous as it was just a gas door...
my mom also had a problem with her old car in the shop.. deer collision.. it was sprayed a diffrent color she didn't know the code to other than it was black jade.. she told the body man, and he acknowledged, but then sprayed the color that matched the door tag, needless to say, it looked horrid being 2 colors... he refused to respray at his cost until she got back ahold of the ins ( Allstate which has a 100% gaurentee ) and let them handle it... was then color scanned with the color camera and resprayed.
Dude, if the dealership doesn't want to fix their f/ups you need to get someone on their case. I'd be ranting to GM about the crappy dealership work on my new GM car for sure. Tell them that the car was ruined by the dealership and has been back x times, every time worse after than before. Make a BIG STINK with them. Tell GM you are buying a couple of Toyotas, and will be happy to dump the cars back into the showroom Tell them (dealer) you have done these things and will be hiring a lawyer, and do so. If it was me, I'd come down with post traumatic stress from dealership disorder. LOL I think I'm getting it now :smash: :smash: :smash:
I work with customers every day in a very large body shop and I have to tell you that line "every body shop would have some flaws" is the WORSE, you can't getting anymore wrong in something to say to a customer. The guy is a moron. If there is a flaw, something that is not a quality control "part issue" then you FIX IT. Even a factory flawed part gets fixed if it can. Somethings can't like a flawed chrome piece or plastic lense or something like that. We will order another, if it is flawed in the same way, than that is out of our control. But even a poor fitting new GM fender or something like that, we would massage it until it fits, if that requires repainting, so be it. The customer MUST be happy with the work.
When it comes to customer service, even when the customer is wrong, we make it right, PERIOD.
No, every bodyshop wouldn't be leaving parts off. :rolleyes:
You know what cracks me up about this guy, when I am delivering a car to a customer and they see something as stupid as the bodyman left the friggin seal out of the door or that foam off, I am EMBARRASSED! I am not about to try and "talk my way out of it". It is a friggin IGNORANT thing for the bodyman to do and I am EMBARRASSED. I WILL make that good, I don't care what has to be done, but it will be done NOW. If the original is lost (likely the foam is lost) then a new one is ordered, if it is days away it is next day aired on our dime. Something as IGNORANT as this, are you kidding me? We take care of it NOW so we don't look any more IGNORANT than forgetting it in the first place! :pain:
Does it happen? Yes, I have been delivering cars with stuff this stupid wrong. And YES I am embarrassed and take care of it RIGHT NOW!
Good luck, and I have been amazed at how the GM customer service dept WILL make things happen.
We were working on an SSR and was told by the parts dept that the chrome grille was discontinued. This is a VERY good parts man who will find us just about anything. So if he says it, it's true. So my employer (a lady) gets on the phone with GM customer service and I am thinking "Yeah right, go ahead and waste your time". I walked out of the office for something and forgot all about it. The next day over the production meeting she says that GM called her back and said that some of these chrome grilles had been "released". I called my parts guy, he checked again and the friggin grille was available!
So YES, the GM customer service my very well help you.
Thanks for all the ideas and help guys. I picked the car up on thrusday evening and it looked alright when I got it but as soon as it rained on sat lots of the scratches they "buffed out" started showing up all over it again. Below are a couple pictures I took of the worst spots. You can see a very scuffed up spot right above the wheel well, and another further up the seam between the bumper and fender, and also some horizontal scratches above the fender.
And now the inside door handle on they door the took apart and repaired is sticking sometimes, and i took a quick look at it and the little plastic clip in the door handle "pocket" has been broke off..............
I called the my insurance company and they said that they will try to stop payment on the $3300 check that they issued to the dealership. Unfortuantly they gave them the check before they even started the work so it may have been cashed already??? They also said that they'll send the claims adjuster out to take a look at it, they deal with this dealership a lot so maybe they'll have some pull with them???
If the insurance company can't do anything then I'll be driving to the dealership and getting a hold of the general manager and showing him the crappy job and see if he'll do anything about it. If not then I guess I'll try calling GM and filling a complaint with them, then the next step would be calling the BBB I guess.
At this point I'd rather not have the bodyshop at the dealer touch it again since it seams like they are just interested in covering up there mistakes instead of actually fixing them. I'd much rather take it to a different body shop and get an estimate to have it fixed and have them do the work, but I'm doubting the dealer would agree to pay for that???
Well wish me luck......................... I guess all of this is just more reason to paint our V8 beetle myself when the time comes............ LOL
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with body shop. You do sound pretty anal about your 'cobalt' on the other hand lol. It's almost like it's Vette or something. They probably put on aftermarket body panels instead of factory so they will never line up correctly.
I know I just have a cobalt, and I wouldn't have said a word if there were just a couple flaws here and there. But just because I have a cheaper car doesn't mean they should get away with a crappy paint job.
The new fender fits fine, they just didn't have the headlight in straight, but the biggest thing was the parts the forgot to put back on the car and then all the scuffs and scratches all over the paint job. Standing 10' away from the car you can see the scuffs and scratches in the last 2 pictures I posted..... I don't think that should be acceptable for a $10,000 or a $100,000 car..........
Cobalt, Corvette, Chevette or whatever you have.. doesn't matter... there 'may' be some slight diffrences in panel fit that could show it has had body work.. but shoddy paint work, or just plain shoddy work should not happen, there is no excuse for doing shoddy work and nobody needs to accept that... even panel fit should be good, it's a dealership and they would have regular access to genuine GM replacement parts
Hello everyone, I just thought I’d give you guys an update on the bodyshop problem with my cobalt.
I ended up calling the general manager of the dealer and left a message saying that I was terribly dissatisfied with their body shop, that I bought 2 brand new cobalts from them 2 months ago and at this point I don’t see any reason why I’d ever want to bring my cars back to them ever again……
So needless to say I got a call from him pretty quickly, I started telling him my problem and he said that he’d transfer me to the body shop manager. I stopped him and told him that the reason I was calling him was that I’ve had my car back to them 3 times and still had problems so I wanted to talk to someone higher up….. I then mentioned that if he couldn’t help me I’d be calling GM corporate office and filling a complaint and also the BBB. That really seamed to get his attention and he said that he’d talk to the body shop manager and have him call me.
About 5 minutes later I got a call from him asking what my problem was, so I told him the story and that this would be the 3rd time I had to bring my car back, etc…….. He thought that we needed to have a meeting about the problem so I stopped by that day after work.
Talking to the body shop manager both on the phone and in person I could tell by the way he was acting that he thought I was just being anal about the paint job and that there wasn’t anything major wrong……….. So then I took him out to the car and plain as day he could see the problem areas standing a few feet away…… He said he didn’t know how it ever got out of the shop like that??? There were probably 10-12 spots at least the size of a deck of cards that looked like someone took some 1000grit sandpaper to the paint and dulled it up. He said that this time he’d personally make sure it was done correctly, ( you’d think he’d do that after it got brought back the 1st or 2nd time)
After talking to him it sounds like the lead body guy that was “supposed” to be taking care of me was trying to blame the problems on other people. After the 1st time I brought it back and I seen scratches all over the car he blamed it on the detailing people for not getting all the wax out of the scratches….. Well the scratches shouldn’t have been there in the first place. So then they buffed the sections again with polishing compound, but didn’t send it to detailing and gave it back to me. When I picked it up it looked good, but as soon as it rained dirt got in all the scratches that were still there……………
This time he said they’d make sure everything was buffed out and if they couldn’t get it fixed they’d repaint…….. We’ll see what happens, they’ve had my car over a day now so maybe it will actually be fixed when I get it back…. I’m crossing my fingers…..
Needless to say if you live in Central, IL I DO NOT recommend taking your car to Green Chevy in Peoria, IL for body work…………………. LOL
I'll keep you guys updated on how it turns out......
