Questions regarding an old altered

I ran across an old altered today I think it looks to be early 60s as the guy says it doesnt look to be homemade the owner said it was purchased complete as built originally the frame is tubular has a chrysler 8 3/4 rear end the engine is a 400 dodge with a 727 trans it has a dual quad manifld the engine is froze from being left outside. it comes with another 400 dodge some dodge head another rear and a trailer cira 1957. It also has halibrand magnesium wheels on the front. The chassies is a hardtail and it has a bantum body. The guy wants $2500 for it which I have no idea if it is a decent price or not but the big question is would I be able to race it at a scanctioned track. Other than the bad engine it seems complete it even has the original race harness .

I am pretty sure it will need a tech inspection and the frame maybe out of date to the point it could need a new one or major upgrades, altered's typically race under the IHRA sanctioning body and I would suggest you check out there web site http://ihra.com and get a rule book. That will give you good information and the answers you are looking for. Good find I really like those types of race cars... another link for these cars and get another look at prises 2500 sounds good but might be to good

It sounds like a decent deal. Like Pepi says, you will probably need another tech inspection, some of that will depend on what type of times you'll want to run. The faster you want to run, the tuffer tech will be. Run at the nostalgia meets, they're a blast. Dan

2500 sounds like a decent price but it would help if you had some pictures to post.

Pepi hit the nail on the head, it may be a museum piece. If the frame is not up to specs it could take a lot to get it there if at all. Sounds super cool, but that could be the deal breaker.

The certification is what I am concerned with some things I seen on it leads me to believe it will have some problems. We have a few tracks close to where I live that dont really have a tech inspection but who knows how long they will be around, the novelty of the find is sort of wearing off and reality is setting in I dont need another machine sitting around. I am going to try and get some pictures but looking at the racing junk site I think there are better deals out there. Are 400 chrysler engines worth anything?

If you had the cash to buy and restore it.......i'm sure it's got some history, and just to own an old altered..... well you know.
think about trying to run a 7 in it. Would YOU?
live to race.

This would scare h*** out of me. I can just see all the rust inside that welded up tubing and the ensuing crumbled up ruble with my body parts mixed in when it gives up the ghost.

I went to talk it over with the guy but he was on the road driving truck, so I looked it over alot better originally who ever did it had done a nice job after that I have no idea what they were doing it would require cutting anything that was added to it off and redoing it all which I wouldnt mind doing assuming the metal is not rusted from the inside. What actually would be a good price on somthing like this The rear end is a 8 3/4 chrysler the front wheels look kind of rare....... heck I was going to list all the good things on it but that might be it ..
