Through the lifter and up the pushrods just like hydraulic. As far as an oil metering system etc. I can't tell you, never messed with'em.

A solid lifter is just that solid, no plunger type thing (excuse the terminology).

the differ in solid and hydraulic lifters are the hydraulic is you adjust it passed the preload and solid you cant but solids are set with a feeler gauge and the others arent usually but they still oil the same though your oil pressure [oilpump] just like when you first rebuild an engine most mechanics take a drill and prime the engine before starting it so it want be a dry start and everything will be oiled good but with the drill you can see that without the motor turning over the oil will reach and come though the top of the pushrods.i like solid because i feel you get truer cam timing than you do with a hydraulic because hydraulic lifters will float at high rpm do to pumping up to much and not bleeding down soon enough as for non pumpup lifters they are not solid lifters but hydraulic and they too will float at high rpm some will not agree with that but that is from my experience and my opinion
