What kind of tranny you should put in it is one you will like and can afford. 6 speeds are nice, but I don't want to pay for one. 5 spds are great for the OD, and resonably priced for something that isn't going to make a ton of power.

What are yor goals for the truck?

Whatever you do, first and foremost, get yourself a daily driver. Projects are going to take twice as long and normally about twice as much money as planned. My truck is my daily driver, and trust me when I say that it sucks to have your truck up on stands working on it, and then suddenly need something or to go somewhere and you cant.

When you say that it has a 3 speed, do you mean a 3 speed auto or manual?

IMO, if your going with a manual, save up until you can afford a strong 6 speed. Then dump some steep gears in the back. A nice set of 3.73 or 4.10's will make that 6th gear useful even in a race. The one big complaint I hear from 6 speed Vette guys is that their 6th gear rarely becomes useful because of their stock gears (which is anywhere from 3.02-3.52 depending on year and model, etc).
