quick question hands dirty

when lining up a 9 keyway chain set and i want to run it at +6 degrees do i still line up the two regular dots on the chain with the crank on the +6 keyway?
Or do i line up the dot on the cam gear with the +6 on the crank gear tooth?

Dot on cam gear facing down in the 6 o'clock toward the crank.

The crank gear has two sets of indicators, the one on the inside aligns with the amount of desired advance or retard to the key position when the crank has number 1 and 6 at TDC. The outer row of numbers is aligned properly when the desired amount of advance/retard number is facing the cam dot.

The number over the key and the number pointing at 12 O'clock toward the cam dot must be the same number.

and the crank on the +6 keyway with the +6 mark on the crank gear tooth at 12 o'clock

this should advance the cam 3 degrees right

Yep, keep in mind that the SBC in this position is set to fire number 6 not number one, so before you close things up rotate it so the crank gear #6 mark is at 12 o'clock and the cam gear dot is also at 12 o'clock. It is now ready to accept the distributor to fire number 1.

You probably already know that, but dadgumit, we always get bit by that one.
