Questions about a 3 speed trans.

Hey can anyone give me any info on the chevy 3 speed manual trans, How are they geared, I've thought about it for my chevelle, I've got 3.73 gears. How would the top end be as far as drivablity and RPMs. I run a 700r4 in it know just so I can have that 4 gear so I dont run it to death on the highway. I'm guessing the 3 speed would be like a turbo 350 but I dont know never had no dealings with one so any info on one anyone can give me would be great. Also would the bell housing bolt up to my 327? Thanks

Well there are a lot of three speed transmissions out there.
I don't know much about them but i can give a little advise hopefully

I don't know much about the gear ratios exept 3rd is 1 to 1
with 3:73 gears you will be buzzing the engine

First. Find one with first gear syncronized
ones that aren't i guess are a pain to drive because you want to shift into 1 gear when moving and all you get is grinding

they are not like a T350 in the way that the T350 uses the converter for a first gear.

best way i have heard them compaired is

powerglide with 2 gears is like using a 3 speed manual
350-400 is like using a 4 speed
over drive 700r4 and 200r4 is like having a 5 speed

hope i have shed some light on the subject

for bell housing it should work depending on what the 3 speed came off of. If it doesn't, you should be able to find one easily
and if i am compleatly wrong someone on this bord will correct me. to all of this someone will correct me and help you

A 3 speed instead of a 700r4 would be bad on both ends. You see the 700r4 has a nice low 1st gear with the plus of having and overdrive. The 3speed will be 1 to 1 in 3rd and buzz the motor as Andrew says. Stick with the 700r4 its about the best out there for all around boxes.

if you are switching from a auto to a manual--- find a donor car to rob the pedal assembly and linkage from! This makes the swap alot easier!
