R10 Overdrives by Borg Warner ?
I am Ilango from India. I and a few friends out here have got some 1.2 - 1.4 Litre 4 cylinder Fiat cars. With roads getting better and more distances on the freeway, we had always been handicapped by the absence of an overdrive (The 4th gear is 1:1). Some friends have dared to swap transmissions from Isuzu and other cars which had a similar engine capacity. With lack of competent and skilled mechanics, I am looking into the possibility of the B/W R10 or R11 OD unit typically used in a Chevy or Ford trcuk.
My idea is to use only the OD part of this transmission and mount it behind the standard 4 speed gearbox. This was I can have 1 direct and 1 OD. I am aware that it also comes with some electrical setup with which once can activate & deactivate the OD. But I want my implementation to be more simpler. I wouldn't need any electrical intrevention. In this regard I would like to have the following doubts clarified by the experts in this forum.
1) Can the unit operate without the one-way clutch?
2) Can I use a cable to operate the pawl such that I disengage the pawl while shifting to overdrive or direct drive? I shall have 1 more gear lever which shall slide the sungear towards the sung gear locking unit for OD or the planet carrier for direct drive.
So, when ever there is a shift from direct to over drive the pawl will be retracted by the cable. The Clutch on the flywheel will be used when ever there is a gear shift in this overdrive gearbox.
