The purpose of racing stripes is to distract the driver in the other lane so they will cut a bad light. Really.

Racing stripes originated with racing cars- real race cars, that is- and they were added to the factory paint to distinguish them from ordinary cars, particularly from identical cars on other teams. This way the fans watching the race could easily determine which car they were cheering for from a distance. Ergo, a car with racing stripes was faster than an ordinary car. Young guys who wanted high-performance cars loved racing stripes, so of course the muscle car manufacturers added them to the cars to help sell more of them. And I thank them for that, because what would an Olds 442 or a '70 Chevelle look like without the big racing stripes on the hood? Plain. Boring. Slow. I love racing stripes. I just saw a brand-new Mustang with the white and blue racing stripe paint job of the old Trans Am factory teams and man, did it look cool.

As for flames- the only thing cooler than racing stripes on a car, are flames. But it depends on the car. Muscle cars need racing stripes, hot rods need flames. There are exceptions, of course, but that's the common-sense rule.

correct me if i am wrong but the original use was to designate what country a race car was from in early sports car racing. I believe the USA was blue with white stripes or was white with blue stripes
