Racing Stripes purpose
Whats the purpose of racing stripes? Are they there just to look cool or is there a more important reason?

They cause less air resistance and speed up the air over for more speed.
 I know they painted hoods in flat black on racing cars to reduce glare from the sun, but I don't know what the stripes were for besides looks.

To be honest the racing stripes do not make the car faster, they give the driver an aggressive attitude and he drives the car faster…..I am adding rally stripes to my Chevelle, should knock a tenth off my ¼ mile time.

 Jeeze...Sure am I glad I read this thread....I was misinformed as a Wee Lad...I was always told by the older guy's: Racing Stripes were To give Bug strikes "Lane Choice"...  Darn, Never know what to believe anymore...LOL

Actually, the space between the stripes serves a purpose. the stripes, even though there are not high off the body, they are high enough so the air gets between those stripes and creates enough turbulence to create down force,
and down force creates traction and traction creates power and power creates speed. LOL..  Alex, seriously they are just for looks.

wow, i thought they were just for looks too, but now i realize my extra $700 went for a lower e.t.! i feel so much better. doc, i'll have to think about you now every time i wash the bugs off my hood.

Alex, stripes are just for looks. They dont make your car faster, they got nothing to do with traction, they're just there to look cool.
Now this would be a different story if you were asking about flames...  Mike
