Rack and pinion in 59 chevy?

Has any one tried to adapt a rack and pinion steering in a big old Chevy? My car is driven 20,000+ miles a year and I would like to improve the handling. It runs and stops well with a TPI 350 and disk brakes, but the steering is sloppy. The 59 Impala was converted to a GM 605 steering box which helped, but still doesn't compare to modern cars. At 3,800 lbs. I don't expect miracles, please give me some suggestions. If possible I would like to use common parts available through salvage. If need be, I can fabricate brackets, cut, weld ect. I would appreciate any help.

This is not a swap to take lightly. Simply "bolting" in a rack will more then likely hurt rather then improve steering performance. Read this article...

There is a LOT of engineering involved here to make this swap work effectively AND safely.

59 chevy rack and pinion

Thanks for the input, I believe I'll drop the idea of the rack and pinion for the time being. It seems there is a lot more complications than I had thought. I now have polyurethane bushings which has tightened up the front end. I guess I'll try big sway bars next.
