rack and pinion steering

I`m building a `38 Ford. It has a Nova (1972) front clip. I would like to use rack and pinion with it if possible. Is it possible and do I need to mount it behind the cross member?

You can do it. But it is easier to put the rack in front of the crossmember and notch the crossmember to clear the steering linkage. You can swap the spindles to make it front steer. If you leave it rear steer you will have to narrow the crossmember to make it work.
