Rack and Pinion stroke

I have a 1939 plymouth p8 sedan Im turning into a cruiser but im have trouble with the rack and pinion set up. I am unable to get a good turning radius. I used a r&p from a 1985 ford escort , does that have a shorter stroke than a mustang II? i just assumed they were the same any suggestion on alternative method.

Use an early Cavalier. Short rack, long arms and good turning radius.
