does it happen with the engine shut off, key in aux position also? or just engine running? if it's just with the engine running, your getting RF from somewhere, could be ignition wires crossed/ incorrect wire ( non suppression, solid core ) or you could have problems with the alternator, if the diodes arn't working properly, it will allow backflow of electricity, and the radio will pick that up. often you will see dash lights/ radio face, getting brite and dark, also you will hear clicking from the speakers.

Doc here,

Does this sound more like a cracking on audio peaks? rather than a Pop..Pop...Pop..?

And does it have an External power amp?

Does this occur when the engine is off as well as on?

The "Clipping" is usually a bad power output amp, or output Capacitor in the amp circuit..and usually comes from a long term partial load (quasi short) to ground on the output lines.. (Speakers)

If you have an External power amp, disconnect it from the radio and test the radio speaker outputs , If it plays good, get another power amp or dump it..If it does not play well, the radio audio Chip is headed south real soon..

it happends when its runnign and on aux... its just the stock set up. what ever rolled off the line in 1988 is what i have. and its a pop pop pop noise and it only comes from the back. Even when i replaced the speakers it still does it. the front ones wont make a sound if you turn the balance all the way to th front it still doesnt play anything. would replace the whole radio it self help fix it?

Doc here,

Are you saying you get no radio ? If so the antenna has pulled out..and the pop is a bad plug wire...

If you are saying only half the system is working check the harness for cuts and poor mating at the plugs..

If your Saying it will only play CD/S in one mode and has no radio, and only a half an out put..the radio has a problem.

only the rear speakers play music when the radio is on. The front speakers dont make any nopise at all. But the rear speakers also pop. even after replaceing them. and at the back of the radio there isnt plugs. or atleast non that i saw. Maybe they are further back in the dash or somehtign but at the back of the radio the wires are just soldered in.

Doc here,

The Player should have a plug at the rear if it is stock, and it should contain all the wires fro the speakers and the power, ground, power antenna, memory, and illumination.

The wires going rear may (or may not) be on a plug as it passes through the body..those are part of the problem. or the plugs if any.

The Fronts are another issue, maybe disconnected or the speakers are not any good anymore.. or maybe the front amp within the player is just dead..

First step is find out if the car has a remote power amp for the player..It was an option..usually under the drivers seat..see if that has power and ground.

If not , next step is using a known good speaker , go to each of the radio speaker outputs and ground and test that channel..if you have sound..it's the speaker (fronts) if not harness or player amp.

This may or may not relate--

I had to send my Custom AutoSound stereo back for repairs

All radio stations were scratchy---CD played fine--for a while
One morning CD changer decided to quit working altogether
(units are over a year old---just installed recently)
Seemed nothing was wrong with the changer--but a cap was replaced in the head unit.
Reinstalled the system--still scratchy reception---CD okay
Gonna change the antenna next.--I was told to check the ground on the antenna. So after tightening, and running a ground wire from the anetenne to the body--Still scratchy reception.

I just hate it when new parts and accessories don't work
Could probably fill a pick-up bed with all the defective "new" stuff I bought.

Bryan
