hi, all,i have a 71 chevelle , i have ordered a new top and recieved it all ready , i have never installed one ,would like to get some opinions on if i should try to install myself, like if i need special tools ,or any thing like that , and if i can,t do it my self , someone told me i had to take whole car to a custom shop and leave , does it not make sense to just bring assembly to the shop ,or does it have to be on the car for some reason , thanks all really appreciate the advice and know how, will
You HAVE to take the car to the shop that is going to install the top. The top you bought isnt necessarily made to fit perfectly, there is alot of stretching and some steaming involved. Most cars the top is fastened to the body of the car via tack strips. Do yourself a favor, and take it to someone to do it. It is a LOT harder than you think. I stopped doing convertible replacement tops, the headaches are just not worth the money to me. There are a few other shops in my town that do them for around $300-$400, and like i said, the money isnt worth it for me.
Check the Pontiac Knowledge Base there is an artice on installing a top on the Firebirds. At least that will give you an idea on whats involved in the install process.
