Rare 65 Chevelle 396 4 bolt block

Hey Guys,
I have a piece of gold, 396 casting 3855962.
I have been looking for the refrence to figure
out the stamped engine code numbers on the
right bank in front of the head on the block....
you know the flat area on the deck surface right in
front of the passenger head. it is "TII04EF" with a "B"
below the "F".
Help...Mortec doesn't help in this area.
Thank you

I found the "EF" suffix listed for a 360HP '66 396 w/3 or 4 speed.
The block casting # indicates '65 or '66 ,4 bolt, High Perf eng.

JohnnYa 396 stampings

Hey thanks.
Yeah the 3855962 on Mortec says 65 only 4 bolt.
No option for 2 or 4 bolt , just says 4 bolt. And that
is what I have. "Hi Perf" is cast in about 3-4 different places.
Just wanted to know what the deck stamps meant.

Did you email the serial # to the fellow at Mortec? I did it once on a Friday night and got a response in a 1/2 hour.
Nice guy.

Have it checked and then hang onto it while you 'put it out there'. Just went through this crap looking for a correct date code etc 440 block for a numbers match Superbird that gained an inspection window while on a casual cruise. Somebody out there NEEDS your block, put it out there, you'll see.

Rare 396 4 bolt block

Thanks for all the insight. I am keeping this
3855962 block I have. I do know where there
is another one though and it is a true 3855962
block, but the guy really wants a ton of money for it
A TON.!! it is all magged, brass frz plugs, crank, rod etc..
in plastic wrap $6500.
I picked mine up for a song and the guy I bought it from was
real cool and split the cost of magging it for cracks with me
before I bought it other wise I wasn't going to buy it. Now if I could
find a set of 3856208 rect port heads. these 396's don't compete
with all the new stuff out there 572's, 540's, 502's, 468's etc.., but I have had and have riden in some 396 car that would make ya crap your pants.
they were under rated on HP from the factory and with a solid lifters like
to houver around 6500 pretty easy and the HP goes from 375 to 425+
by just going from hyd to solid.

Are you sure it's not IF code? The 962 casting was 396/425 Corvette. First introduced in February 65. By the 66 model production they were using 427's and the left over 962 castings (396 blocks) were used in the Z-16 Chevelle's or sold over the counter. They made 211 Z-16 Chevelles and they were rated at 375 HP. You have a valuable block.

65-396 4 bolt 962-cast Thanks "1930u"

Hey there,
I looked again and it looks like "EF" not "IF" on the stamped area
on block deck pass side.
Looks like this
TII04EF
B
The "B" is below the "F" and to the right.
"Hi Perf" is cast all over the block like 5 or 6
places.
