Ratcheting sound when I turn???

Okay do I just need some grease? My 1980 truck makes a loud machine gun sound when I turn. What different things can it be?

Get the front wheels off of the ground and shake the tires up and down and side to side to see if you find any play.

I had a problem similar in a '76 Blazer, it was the front hubs (auto hubs). Changed them to manual locking hubs, problem solved. The ratcheting sound was on sweeping turns, not always a hard right or left turn.

Ya that sounds about the same but its a 2WD 1/2 ton so I don't know if manual hubs would do it or that its possible??
