Post Rats and Strokers

I'm still a little confused what the difference between a stroker and rat engine is. I was told once that shaving down the heads is what made a rat engine. As far as I can tell so far, small blocks are strokers and big blocks are rats. But I don't know what makes what. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

gravelhead;

A stroker is any engine, BB or SB,any make, even bikes, that have a replacement crank and rods, to increase the stroke, and thereby the displacement.

I believe "rat" was just a pet name(no pun intended) given to the 427 BBC, because it was so mean. The name "mouse" for the 327 SBC just sort of came naturally, after the Rat.

exactly, rat has become synonymous with big blocks, i believe that the name came about as small blocks were called mouse motors from the mickey mouse like "ears" found on the early camelhump heads, remember that the big block at the time of the smallblock launch in 55 was the old 348/409 and when the new big block came as an big brother to the small mouse motor, well the next rodent in line was the rat being bigger and the name just stuck...
