Re: '68 Mustang Rear End

Working on a 68 Mustang Coupe. My plan is to pull the 302 out and replace it with a 351W / C4 combo. The question I have is in reference to the 8 rearend. Will the 8.8 out of an Explorer bolt right in or will there be some medications needed. I'm trying to avoid having to get into shortening a rearend and all that. I know where I can get a 9 that will bolt right in, but I already have an old 8.8 out of an Explorer that would save me a couple of dollars if I could use it instead of buying the 9.

The Explorer has a lot of pinion offset that would need to be corrected by shortening one axle tube and axle. It will also need the correct spring perches in the correct loaction. You will have to change the pinion flange to a yoke or modify the drive shaft to work with the flange.

The 8 inch is a pretty good rear end and could hold up to a mild 351 with an automatic.

I'd do the 8" also.. Plenty of Aftermarket support and it will hold up fine.
