re T-Bird 351 swap.

I'll start from the top; I have an 86 T-Bird FI 5.0, and I have an 89 Club Wagon Econoline Van/ bus, W/ 351 fi engine. I'm putting the 351 into the 'Bird. I also have a set of 5.0 stock factory tubing shorty headers. My questions are 1. will the headers work if I use a pair of lowered motor mounts? 2. I know I need a rear sump oil pan and the van has a rear sump, everyone says I need a pan from a 351 Crown Victoria, or Gran Marquis. could I use the van pan? 3. I am using the 351 lower intake, and have been told the 5.0 upper will bolt up properly. If so, which E.C.M. do I use as I have both. 4. I will use the A-OD as this one WILL upshift into O.D. under full throttle. I have researched the problems with this trans and will address them upon full rebuild, which I think is due after 150,000+ miles. and finally does anyone know how I can access H.P numbers for the stock 351, and is this a roller 351? thanks for any and all input as this is a budget swap I am trying to acheive after doing a lot of trading for these two vehicles.

the mounts off the 5.0 should work on the 351.the headers will work.
why can't you use the pan off the t bird?
the upper intake won't fit right and yes use the ecu out of the van.
don't know for sure on the roller, pull the intake and see.

  • Now is the 5.0L an HO or Standard Engine?

  • It should. I think it was STEEDA that offered the lowered mounts just for this application (or FOX MUSTANG really

  • No. You will need the dual sump pan from a 5.8L CROWN or FORD RACING makes a complete kit.

  • It depends upon which lower plenum you use. Check FORD RACING PARTS catalog.

  • If so, which E.C.M. do I use as I have both.
  • It again depends on which 5.0L you have. Different firing orders. Also depends on MAF or Speed Density.

Info;

The firing order is determined by the camshaft in your engine. If you change the camshaft, then this information may not be valid.

ALL 302 5.0L engines from 1982-up have the 50 oz imbalance.

There are three kinds of 302s made from 1982-2001.

5.0L HO This engine was used in 1983-1995 Mustangs, Mark VII Lincolns, and some T-birds and Cougars. All Explorer 5.0L engines are 5.0L HO engines as well. They use the 351W firing order, 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Except for the 1983-84 Mustangs, all of these engines are roller cam equipped. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover. The 1994-5 Mustang and all Explorers use a unique front cover and water pump.

5.0L Full Size Car This engine was used in 1982-1990 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis. They use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. Most of these cars are not roller cam equipped, however sometime in the early 1990s they started using roller cams but retained the 302 firing order. They use a standard (clockwise) rotation water pump and front cover.

5.0L Truck (except Explorer) These engines are similar to the Full Size Car engines, except they use different intake manifolds and camshaft profiles. They also use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. They also began using roller cams sometime in the early 1990s. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover.

You can retrofit a roller cam in any of these blocks if they are cast with the roller lifter holddown bosses. These are two threaded bosses in the lifter valley. Most blocks after 1987 have these bosses, and 351W engines after 1995 have them.

The HO will have the throttle body pointing to the right of the engine, the Standard to the left usually.

'86-'88 T-birds used the low-output 5.0, similar to the CV/GM motor, but with the intake on the passenger side, similar to the HO Mustang's.

I think somebody at www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com has done a 351 swap.

351 T bird swap

Since I'm pulling the 5.0 out I need to know more about the 351, but any info is good knowledge. I'll try the FORD oil pan, seems they had this idea on the back burner back then, Thanx for input.
