If that was out on the east side of town on Logan (or at least it was "out east" back in those days), then I'm thinking it was Cooks where I got the body and not Steerling. I do remember they used to have a glass bucket in their shop suspended from the ceiling. And I recall for certain that I got the body in Belvidere and not Rockford. So most likely it was Cooks.
Speaking of VW's running V8's AND Byron Speedway, here is my C/Altered that I raced back in the early 70's. I ran mostly at Union Grove but I did run a couple times at Byron (blowing up an engine there on one occasion). The first shot is from the pits at Great Lakes. The car had a Chapman funny car chassis and ran a small block Chevy with tunnel ram and 2-4's along with a clutch turbo transmission. Had to give up racing when the kids were born and there just wasn't enough time left in the day to remain competitive on the track.
Thanks for the memories about Belvidere and Rockford racing. And pass along my thanks to your dad as well for sharing those stories.
