really stupid question but i need help
hi,
i really feel stupid but i'll not sleep if i have no responde to this question today i was changing the shift lever with a new one from b&m i followed the instruction and everything went pretty well while i was finishing the job sitting in my car my friend moved the car to get something under it i watched the shift lever and it was in first gear ( automatic) after that the car shop closed so we had to go and i didn't have the time to check on the trans lever what was going on is it normal that a car can be moved when it is in first gear? the car wasn't running and when i putted the shift lever in park it locked the wheels i hope it is understandable sorry for my english i'm italian, thanks, marco |

noooooo problem, with an automatic transmission if the car is not running it is like the transmission is in neutral....joe

If I am reading this right then yes it is normal. In first gear the car will move when it is not running. You will be moving one side of the torque converter most likely.

some old Ford cars will move in park if the linkage is out, became so big of a problem with them jumping out of park that Ford sent out stickers to every known Ford owner, instructing them to place them in the center of the dash. they basicly say to fully engauge in park, set the parking brake b4 getting out. my '67 Falcon has 1 of them still in it, and it does have trouble locking into the park pawl.
