When dealing with 5 lug wheel rear ends that are common and popular....
The most narrow 8 inch Ford rear ( non narrowed ) is a V8 Maverick ( 5 lug wheels ) ..........and it is 56 inches.....measured this way.....

The most narrow 9 inch Ford is a 57 to 59 Ford .....about 57 and 1/4 to 57 and 1/2 inches.......measured the same way.

here are two popular Ford rear end sites.......check then out....

http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm

I always use a 9 inch Ford.....the 8 inch is weaker, has less gear options from Ford and has less parts support. The 8 inch was never installed in anything Ford built with over 250 to 260 rated HP. More than that....Ford put the 9 inch in it.....

Good enough guideline for FOMOCO........good enough guideline for me.....
