Rear axle help

I'm just about to rebuild my 1999 gmc jimmy's (not a hot rod, I know ) rear axle but I'm having a hard time figuring out what axle it is. I could be a 7.5rg, 7.625rg, or a 8.5rg.

I'm pretty sure its a 7.625 but I wanna be sure before I order all my parts. GM says that the 7.625 axle has 28 spline axle shafts, my question is will the pinion gear also have 28 splines? I'll b easier counting those splines then pulling an axle shaft.

Some info:

1999 GMC Jimmy
4.3L/4l60e
4wd
sle
towing package.

Thanks for any help.

you might be right, looking at that link my diff cover does not have a fill/drain plug. I guess the only way is going to be pulling an axle shaft, I was hoping to avoid that.

7.625 will have 27 splines on the pinion.
8.5 will have 30 splines on the pinion.

the photos in that link are to show the cover shape, aftermarket covers sometimes have drain plugs.. that one, that high up. is a fill not a drain
