I have an 8.8 Ford rear end that needs the outer housing bearings replaced.... I can't get the old bearings out. Any old tricks to remove them short of buying an $80.00 slide hammer bearing remover?

I have a Ford 8.8 rearend that needs the outer axle housing bearings removed. Any suggestions... old tricks...? Any thing short of buying an $80.00 sliding bearing remover that I would use once every 30 years.

just an idea, never tried it = put the tire/wheel on it. then hit the tire with a large hammer. i have a slid hammer.

I have a drift pin that was made from an old 3/8 drive extention that would fit through one of the axel retaining bolt holes and I would hit it with a 3 lb or larger hammer , this wouldwork for all but the toughest ones . When that didn't work I would rent a puller . But on the other hand Advance Auto and many of the others will lend you the tools if you buy their parts .
just another thougt use a peace heavy about 6 ft fasten it to the axel on one stud slide a tire iron through a link on the other end and whip the chain

I used a $20 slide-hammer puller, but that barely got mine out. I had to tap one of them inwards slightly before it would move outward. Dang near wore me out. Might try the $40 one next time. Auto Zone will let you use theirs if you let them hold a cash deposit while you have it.
Somebody told me he used a long steel rod that would barely fit through the diff splines and punched them out from the other side of the housing. Sounds like a good story, but I never tried it.

Actually, I did just that, except I used a long peice of 1/2" Re-bar. Long enough to reach the back side of an axle bearing and still stick out the other end where I could hit it.
