A power booster isn't required or neccesary, but without one you'll need to really clamp down on the binders. Unlike drum brakes, discs are not self-energizing, so they require higher pedal pressures/ or booster to make them work well.

I converted my nine inch to disc brakes not using a booster, tried a manual 1 1/8 m/c for disc brakes I couldn't make them work for nothing, went back and put on a regular 7/8 bore m/c works fine
