Hello i have a 400 sb with a 350 turbo tranny. Whats the best rear end, posi unit, and gears should i put on my 86 monte carlo ss? Is it best to to just put gears and posi and my rear end or should i change the whole rear end? i was told to put 4.10 gears...? Im plannin on using for track and to drive on the streets.

It depends on what you're using the car for. Daily Driver, Drag Race, Weekend Cruiser or Grocery Getter?

Your '86 Monte has the small 7.5 rear end with 26 spline axles. It's about the weakest rear end that you can get. Your 400 is going to need a stronger rear end if you plan on racing it. Don't waste money on the 7.5. You need to replace it.

The only bolt in rear end that will fit your car and is strong enough is the 8.5 that was in the Grand National, T Type and some of the 442s. These rear ends are rare and somewhat expensive. There are after market bolt in rear ends, but they are also expensive. You are probably looking at around $1000 to $2200 for a complete rear end, depending on which one you get.

There were posi rear ends that came in the 1980s Montes. Not many cause I'd like to own one for my '86 LS Monte.

Mike @ Mike's Montes is one source as is Dixie Monte Carlo Depot. They both have web sites.

A 12 bolt rear from a 1960s, early '70s Chevelle, El Camino, Camaro, or Firebird would be a close swap in to the Monte.

You can also ask what other SS owners have done on Monte Carlo SS.com.

The 8.8" Ford is a real good swap that is becoming popular. Check www.maliburacing.com for info, it's in the Drivetrain section of their forums.

Nope, only G-bodys to get the 8.5" were the Turbo Buick Regal and Grand National and the Hurst Olds and 442'S. Monte SS didn't ever get an 8.5"

I never will figure out why Olds thought the 307 needed the 8.5".
