rear end

I have a ? I have a 69 Nova. I have a wheel seal leaking,I have pulled the cover off taken a bolt out that is supposed to hold a rod in so I can push axles together and take c clips off to pull axles. My problem is the rod wont move the bolt I removed dosn't appear to be long enough to be holding it is something else in there??
