Rear end choices

I am in the process of tinkering with my 79 Firebird and I have come to a stumbling block. I know that the 2.73 rear end that came stock will jusy not make it with the goal I have in mind. I envision a weekend driver with lots of HP and torque that I can have some fun with. It will have a 383 under the hood, and more than likely a th400 or th350 w/a shift kit. My dilema is what rear end to put underneath it. Should I go w/a ford 9"m a gm 12 bolt, or something completely different. I would like to have 3.73's when finished.

So what would you do? I'm looking for suggestions with a little reason behind it, so can you please give me a short reason for your choice. Thanks a lot.

If your running a set of street slicks I would get the 12 bolt. Why? Because you can probably find one from a Camaro, Firebird, Chevelle, ect... that will be about the same width and will bolt right up with no fabrication. If your using regular tires, Id beef up the rear end in it with some Mosier axles and have fun. HG

I heard both rears are great. The Ford 9 you can make gear changes without removing the rear end. Many say the12 bolt is stronger.
