Post rear end gear swap

I have been told that if you have a low numaricly gear ratio you cant put most gear ratios in that rearend. Then I was told that they just sit differently in the carrier. I have a chevy 10 bolt with 2.41:1 gears, its an open carrier, what do I need to do to put in say 3 -3.5:1 gears and a posi. It is in a 79 camaro and will have a completely rebuilt engine, all new parts other than block. I can get a ford 9 in for the same price as another chevy 10 bolt that is a 3:1 or higher ratio(100.00). I dont mind the 2.41 gears but its nice to keep my options open, im thinking of modifing a different rearend so I have a steeper geared spare for the drag strip.

to change over to a 3.55 posi you will need just that , a 3.55 ring and pinion, and a 3-series posi for the year and model rear you have, then get a competent rear end guy to set it up, it ain't easy.

any higher (numerically) than a 3.73:1 and you will need a new casing back there. you probably dont have to worry about that though with the gears your getting. :p
