rear end help?????

Hi,

I want to put a 3:73 posi into my 1981 chevy short box. I've been looking all over and have confused myself with all these different numbers. Like 7.5'' rear ends,, and 7 5/8'' ,, and 8.5'' rear ends. Also with 28 spline and 30 spline. Now it figures when I had mine apart last, i did not count or measure anything inside it, besides the gear ratio.

The truck is a 1981 chevrolet silverado. 1/2 ton
The rear end is a 10BOLT 2:73 gear ratio
The numbers i found on the diff housing are ( all this was found on the housing, facing the motor, on the driver side, and the passenger size. I did not find anything on the axles tubes, but i am going to look again tomorrow with a wire brush instead of the sand paper i had at the time.

GM 36 1254333 and L20

I have no idea what these numbers mean, or how to figure out what this axle is from, or if its the original axle.

The brakes are 2 1/2 '' wide brakes, which i believe are the larger of the two sizes. And the u-joints are the larger of two sizes. If this helps at all.

If anyone can please help me find out what type of posi 3:73 I need to buy taht will fit into this rear end, that would be just amazing.

Thanks in advance ,

Adam D

1/2 ton should be a 8.5" 10 bolt...
Count the axle splines
Make a list of what you want (gear, posi, beaing/shim kit. axle bearings & seals), etc
Call 800-521-0628
DTS in Detroit....

Man, the only way too know for sure is to tear into it and count them yourself. That's the only way to keep from getting something you may not need.
