rear end housing bent?

Question for the gurus:

I had my car by a chassis alignment shop yesterday. They told me that my p****enger side axle housing is bent. (the orig 12 bolt rear end). Its bent 3/8".

the guy told me that they straighten them "all the time" that are between 1/8 and 3/16 out.

Says he would know pretty quick if he could straighten it. If he could i would be looking at $450 or so.

Anyone car to comment on this prognosis.?

Is 3/8" too much? Should I be looking at replacement housings?

I know what they cost... ~$2k on average fully assembled down to $600 empty.

Just looking for some more knowledgeable opinions.

Thanks,

Roy

If the chassis guy is good he can fix the housing and you'll be just fine. I've straightened a few of them myself.
Make sure he is not going to charge you if he finds out he can't fix it though.

Bent how?

The right side axle tube is bent 3/8" toward the back of the car. Causing a toe-out condition on the rear of the car.

Bad wreck in '90. Slapper bar hit a curb as the car was proceeding over a curbed median. Bent the trac-bar.

I've been driving the car like that since then. Never noticed it.

I only brought it to the chassis shop to have them diagnose a couple of other things that were driving me crazy.

Drivetrain vibe, front end slack etc... They told me the tailshaft my trans was pointing down (this is a custom crossmember sold to me by Bowtie Overdrives). They suggested I shim it up 1/4". Which I did. I replaced the rear u-joint too. Tightened the front wheel bearings to .005" endplay.

Told me I had a flat spot on my left front tire too.

Overall the visit to the shop was worthwhile as I was able to address 3 of the 5 problems they found in a few hours.

I guess new tires and either a new housing (ouch) or if I'm lucky they can bend mine back.

Thanks for all the replies.

Roy
